A Love I Managed To Miss

I always thought a person could only love another
If distance was not a factor
If they were close enough to speak and see
To hold each other tight without taking leave

Visiting for the first time in years
The beam of the smile and those tiny arms
And as i'm lead into the room of toys I feel my heart melt
I haven't thought through what he might have felt

A soft voice speaks clearly but I have to ask twice
“I miss you”
My heart shatters and my arms hold him tight
The tears are tough to fight

I never thought of it
Never tried to understand
But if distance doesn't matter
If it only makes our hearts yearn for the other
Then I promise to close that gap
I promise to heal the wound
To cover the scars with love
And to make you whole again...
